Does my tum look big in this?!

All change

Many things can change our body shape such as puberty, pregnancy, childbirth, illness and medication, and of course the change: menopause. Perimenopause and menopause can affect our body shape leading to us carrying more bulk around our midsection. This in turn can mean styles we felt confident in previously don't seem to work for us.You're a natural

As women, our natural shape typically is to have some curve in our abdomen (think of all we need to fit in there!). But because of societal expectations - real or perceived - we call our tummies 'big' or 'fat', instead of accepting or even celebrating our natural shape. So whilst I'd love you to be confident with your shape, if you're self-conscious about that midsection, read on.

The empire strikes back

A good style for those with curve around the tummy is a fitted empire-line dresses or top; tapered under the bust the style flares out below, skimming over the waist and tummy area.

The column method

Choose an inner column of colour: the same (similar) colour in top-and-bottom separates or a dress, worn under a longer-line jacket, cardigan or coat in contrasting colour, like these items from Kettlewell.

Dress it up

Opt for straight styles like a shift dress or mini pinny to skim over your middle and show off your legs. Or choose wrap dresses that elongate the torso with ruching over the tummy.

Waist not want not

Remember: some curve over the tummy is completely normal. If you’ve become curvier in the tummy through hormonal changes as you age, your natural shape and proportions won’t have changed. If you had waist definition before, it will still be there! Feel where your natural waistline is and don’t be afraid to emphasise it, through tailoring and belts, to add interest and definition to your outfits.

Best foot forward

My mum always said that the most attractive part of her body was her ears, which I think is rather sad! But whether it’s literally your best foot or your ears, your cleavage, your waist or your legs, celebrate that through the styles and colours you choose. Use bolder colour or pattern, body-skimming styles or bare skin, interesting textures and statement accessories.
